Joey That's a neat little devise you got there I will have to build me one of them one day. Can't wait to see how Bill will improve it and we all know he will.
Joey thanks for that picture, looks very interesting(and CHEAP is my middle name!!)....and Gene.... the only thing I see doing different is maybe in stainless, since I have some laying around....
I spooled the reel using a leather welding glove, and kinda forgot I needed to pull off the spool in the direction the spinning reel was taking the line on, so it didn't get a bunch of line twist....that would work good for the conventional reels ....that I am going to due too....thanks for the advice and help

Bill here's what I came up with a couple years ago. It's not pretty but it's cheap and works like a charm.
A piece of allthread, a strong compression spring, a few nuts, washers and thats bout it.
I used 3 or 4 greased teflon washers on each side of the spool to make it smoother.
I spool all my reels and never once had a problem.
Didnt read all of replies but best thing i've seen to do is only use maybe 1/2 spool of mono then other half braid on top . Dont need a whole spool of braid on the reel. When u first cast it out, go ahead & let the rest of the braid out then when its wet, Reel it in with normal tension. has worked for me. Fish with it all the time.
The one that I made used the same tension set-up as the others, but it's permanently mounted on a 4X4 post in my barn. I used a piece of scrap aluminum stock for a mounting base. The shaft is a long carriage bolt, and adjustable tension is with a nut, a spring, some big fender washers and some old drag washers. Cheap & simple!
Hey Bill, I've used a phone book as a tensioner before. Just find the middle, slide the in and let her rip. You can vary the tension by using your thumb and forefinger to hold the line. My cheap-o way to do it. Eric, that's great info you put up there. I can use it and really appreciate it.
Bill, when you coming down this way? Let's try to get everyone together so you can buy us a beer, er, so we can buy you a beer.
This worked real good for me!!! Thanks Mark!! didn't have much time to make a tensioner like what has been posted....down sized some line on one of my bottom reels
