Help me decide on new rod/reel bottom fishing combo for my wife..
I am wanting to get a new lighter higher speed reel for my wife to bottom fish with this summer. I am looking for something lighter/smaller and easier to handle than the 4/0 and 6/0 Senators she uses now. This set up will be used strictly for bottom fishing for snapper, grouper, aj's the usual characters. My dad fishes with a Daiwa Saltist LD 35 on a tiger lite jigging rod and she likes it pretty good. My dad always try to get her to use it but she won't because it is "his". I don't want to spend a fortune on this reel but i want something that is smooth and won't blow apart on the first decent snapper (She is the self appointed snapper queen on the boat). I was looking at the Daiwa LD 30, the new Penn Fathom, Avet? not too familiar with those.. any other suggestions??? Would be using braid...

I just bought an Okuma Cedros star drag reel to jig with and it is a very high quality reel for the money. I have two other Okuma reels and they have preformed flawlessly so far and they seem to have a much better price point than similar reels.
I got the CSD 12 for a more line capacity but the CSD 10 may be a better choice for your wife, they have a 6.2:1 gear ratio and are also available in a lever drag version. I paid 279 for the reel and they spooled it with 80lb Jerry Brown and shipped it for free. They also had the Okuma jigging rods on sale which pair up pretty nice.
don't rule out the little avet single speed sx. i bought one to use for light jigging and it's a tough little bugger. they'll make 12 lbs of drag with good freespool, they're light weight and they look good. You can find used ones one ebay for around a bill, often with new braid on them.
I've never used the 10 but the 12 , 16 and 20 are all bad to the bone. I would be willing to bet the 10 in low gear would do great as well.
did good with the big shark I had on, till I saw it was a shark then begged for some one to cut the line(80lb braid), then gave it to Cliff........I was soooo sore from fishing the pier the day before.......catching, netting and gaffing fish for 12 hours then going out with Recess the next day, and that was the first fish...I just took off the 80lb and put 50lb braid on it....with the bimini and not sure what to tie with it,? on the leader side.
